Research, Experience and Career Students Symposiums (RECSS)

cubeThe Research, Experience and Career Students Symposiums are a series of student and faculty presentations hosted by the Computer Science & Engineering Mentoring Program.

Presentations can be about internship experiences, research and thesis projects, and any other topic related to a student’s experience. They serve to promote research in our field, expose students to new research ideas and possibly encourage students and faculty to work together on a particular topic. They are a perfect way for current students and faculty to be aware of what others are working on and what type of experiences they had.

Students and faculty from all departments are invited since most of the topics could have an implementation on more than one field. The RECSS also serve as a step-stone for students and faculty of different majors to work together on different aspects of a topic and ultimately expose different sides of the Computer Science and Engineering fields.

Since Fall 2006 we associated the RECSS with a new logo, so that students and faculty could better identify our presentations. We wanted to create something simple (basic shape, such as a cube, sphere, etc.), but at the same time something that would stand out. We were also looking for something that everybody could easily relate to, so the idea of the Rubik's cube came to our mind. A high number of individuals have played with it or at least have seen it and identify it. The cube has math origins and it is a device that can be used to develop minds and to understand a variety of concepts such as permutations. In the RECSS we have a very similar objective, we want students to think of RECSS as a device they can use to learn about the CS and Engineering fields.

Here is a list of interesting facts about Rubik's cube

  • A Normal (3x3x3) Rubik's Cube can have 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 permutations.
  • The first world championship was held in Budapest on June 5, 1982 and was won by Minh Thai, a Vietnamese student from Los Angeles, with a time of 22.95 seconds.

RECSS are held every Tuesday from 12 - 1 at ENGR 1.272.

The Department of Computer Science is also committed to assist students to complete their academic study successfully. Help is offered to all students through Teaching Assistants (located in ENGR 3.264) and Laboratory Consultants from our Computer Laboratories (located in ENGR 2.214 and ENGR 2.220).
